“The Texas Longhorn made more history than any other breed of cattle the civilized world has known.” (663) On Sunday September 4th, the UT football team was getting ready to play Notre Dame. The stadium was packed and it was one of the most exhiliarting games I have ever experienced. You would think that the most exciting moment of the game was when Swoopes scored the winning touchdown after double overtime. However, if you were in the stadium you know this was not true. The most exciting moment took place before the game even started. When they finally revealed the new Bevo the crowd went wild. Bevo is one of the most iconic icons at The University of Texas at Austin. The very first longhorn was debued in November of 1916 against A&M College Station.(We won the game 21-7) During halftime The longhorn was brought out and soon became the face of the school. It was bought for $124 from a raid near Laredo. (texasexes)

How does a farmer view his animal? Does he or she view them as a source of income? a companion? just a plain ol’ animal? The treatment of animals has been a topic of discussion for quite sometime now. From the dog fighting to how pigs are slaughtered to how animals are treated at Sea World there always seems to be a new case of animals being abused and mistreated. When did the value of animals decrease? “The relationship between herders and the herded was a close one in the early days, when herds were small and individual animals were still important.” (699) Back in the day, animals were taken care of and respected. They were not just seen as a source of income and were even viewed as companions. What are ways that we can restore this respect that animals deserve? Another One thing is to understand the link between animal abuse and domestic abuse. It is important to report animal abuse when you suspect or see it. Reporting one case, could save that animal and even the family involved. Teaching children to respect animals is also very important. Teaching good habits when a child is young, will have positive effects in their adult life. “The assumption that animals are without rights and the illusion that our treatment of them has no moral significance is a positively outrageous example of western crudity and barbarity. Universal compassion is the only guarantee of morality.” (Arthur Schopenhauer)
